Blue Dogs Applaud Bipartisan Passage of Comprehensive Government Funding Bill
WASHINGTON – Today, the Blue Dog Coalition voted in support of the FY2017 Omnibus Appropriations Act that funds the federal government for the current fiscal year.
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Blue Dog Co-Chair for Communications, issued the following statement:
“The passage of the FY2017 Omnibus Appropriations Act serves as an example of what is possible when Republicans and Democrats come together on one of the most basic functions of Congress, funding the government. This bill is by no means perfect to our colleagues on either side of the political spectrum, but that’s compromise — and that is what the American people expect us to do. They expect us to come together on Congress’s basic responsibilities, such as funding the government, without hesitation and without needless political posturing. Even more so, the American people expect us to come together to solve the larger, more complex problems our country continues to face.
“Although we commend our Republican and Democratic colleagues for coming together, this bill doesn’t address our nation’s ongoing fiscal crisis. We have to address our growing budget deficits. According to the Congressional Budget Office, if we don’t address the current laws, the federal debt will increase to 150 percent of GDP in 2047. The Blue Dogs will continue to work hard to find a bipartisan solution that puts us on the path to fiscal stability. So let’s roll up our sleeves, come together, and find real solutions for real problems”
