Blue Dog Leadership to House Republicans: We Must Act Now on a Bipartisan Solution for Health Care
Today, the co-chairs of the fiscally-responsible Democratic Blue Dog Coalition—Reps. Jim Costa (D-CA), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), and Daniel Lipinski (D-IL)—released the following statement in response to President Trump’s decision to sign an executive order to end cost-sharing reduction (CSR) payments:
“President Trump’s signing of an executive order to cut CSR payments produces no positive results. Not only does this harm hardworking Americans and middle-class families, it also adds $194 billion to the already unsustainable deficit over 10 years. As we have seen throughout the entire battle over health care policy, partisan moves don’t produce solutions that are in the best interest of the American people. The American people will see that when they feel the cruel results of this decision, including some Americans now being forced to pay 20 percent more in health insurance premiums. In addition, Americans across the country will see fewer health care options because of this executive order.
“The Blue Dogs have been at the forefront of producing commonsense bipartisan solutions. Earlier this year, we endorsed Rep. Kurt Schrader’s ‘Solutions Over Politics,’ a set of health care principles intended to stabilize the individual market and improve the Affordable Care Act. Since then, those principles have served as the foundation for a bipartisan effort in the House to help improve our health care policy, and we have seen bipartisan negotiations in the Senate. It is now up to congressional Republicans to respond to the Administration’s careless decision in a responsible way – and that means they must act now to pursue a bipartisan solution to this problem. The American people are counting on Republicans and Democrats to put partisan talking points aside, roll up our sleeves, and get big things done in Congress. The Blue Dogs are ready to do everything we can to make this happen.”
