Blue Dog Leadership Statement on the House Passing the FY 2018 Republican Budget
Today, the co-chairs of the fiscally-responsible Democratic Blue Dog Coalition—Reps. Jim Costa (D-CA), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), and Daniel Lipinski (D-IL)—released the following statement in response to the House passing the FY 2018 Republican budget:
“When we announced the Blue Dog Vision for Tax Reform, we urged Republicans to pursue a bipartisan process for tax reform instead of the failed, partisan reconciliation process – the same failed process they used in their attempts to repeal health care.
“Today, it is obvious that Republicans’ long-time calls for getting our national debt and deficit under control have been silenced purely for political gain. The GOP budget that was passed in the House today serves only as a vehicle for a tax bill that could add up to $1.5 trillion to our national debt. That will worsen a national debt that, for the first time in U.S. history, surpassed $20 trillion this year. That’s $1.5 trillion more that our children and grandchildren will have to pay back.
“Perhaps it will take yet another partisan failure for congressional Republicans to see the light, turn to the governing wing of its party, and reach across the aisle to get real tax reform done. History proves that a bipartisan process can lead to credible revenue neutral tax reform. Our hope is that our Republican colleagues remember that and change their course.
“We must trust each other again. We must work with each other again in real, substantive ways, because it’s obvious that pervasive partisanship simply doesn’t serve the American people.”
