WASHINGTON—Today, the Blue Dog Co-Chair for Communications, Rep. Lou Correa (CA-46) issued the following statement in response to the New York Times report revealing that, last year, President Trump suggested withdrawing the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

“Our word is our bond. Our strength as a nation relies upon keeping our promises to our allies and partners around the world who work together to keep our country safe. That is how we became the greatest nation on Earth. In a time when Vladimir Putin is pursuing an aggressive strategy to attack western values and democracy around the world, we cannot back down from our core American values. Our NATO allies were there for us after the attacks on September 11, 2001. They kept their promise, and that only strengthened the fight against global terrorism. Now is not the time to back down—now is the time fight these forces alongside our strong network of allies.”
