Blue Dog Leadership Responds to House Passing the GOP Budget Resolution
Today, the co-chairs of the fiscally-responsible, Democratic Blue Dog Coalition—Reps. Jim Costa (D-CA), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), and Daniel Lipinski (D-IL)—released the following statement in response to the House passing the GOP budget resolution:
“The Blue Dogs have always called for a bold, bipartisan, balanced budget that addresses our nation’s out-of-control deficit spending. We have also advocated for a budget that ensures a strong national defense, makes smart investments needed to create jobs, and protects our most vulnerable. Our approach has always been one of balance and responsibility that puts our country on the path to economic prosperity. The House GOP budget resolution was not developed with that approach.
“We all know the main reason congressional Republicans wanted to pass this partisan budget resolution. It’s because they want to pave the way for using the partisan reconciliation process as a vehicle for tax reform – the same process they attempted to use to repeal health care. If Republicans continue to use reconciliation for their tax proposal, it’s an indication to the American people that they are not interested in a truly bipartisan solution.
“Yesterday, when we announced the Blue Dog Vision for Tax Reform, we called on congressional Republicans to stop pursuing reconciliation, and look to a truly bipartisan effort and regular order. The American people are counting on Republicans and Democrats to come together to develop real, balanced solutions. They want Congress to stop producing failed, partisan bills and to do its job – to govern.”
