Blue Dog Leadership Responds to Bipartisan Border Deal
WASHINGTON—Today, Blue Dog Co-Chair for Administration, Rep. Stephanie Murphy (FL-07) issued the following statement in response to the bipartisan border deal:
“This deal is not perfect, but it reflects the needs of the American people, which are securing our borders and ports and keeping the federal government open. In this era of divided government, we must work in a bipartisan way to address this country’s challenges, and Blue Dogs commend both sides for reaching a commonsense compromise that allows us to move past this crisis. The President should never again harm working families, our economy, and our national security, by forcing a government shutdown in an attempt to get his way. As Blue Dogs, we will continue to work with both parties to find common ground and to ensure the American people never see another government shutdown again; we hope the President will do the same.”
On January 23, the Blue Dog Coalition sent a letter to leadership of both parties in the House and Senate calling for reopening the government, followed by a substantive, bipartisan, bicameral discussion on border security that would produce legislation that could quickly pass both chambers of Congress – ideally with a veto-proof majority.
Two days later, President Trump announced he would take up the same path the Blue Dog Coalition proposed. Today’s border security deal is the result of the Blue Dog Coalition’s proposal for bipartisan, bicameral negotiations, which ended the longest government shutdown in United States history.
