Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, the co-chairs of the fiscally responsible Democratic Blue Dog Coalition—Reps. Jim Costa (D-CA), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), and Dan Lipinski (D-IL)—released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s tax reform plan:

"The Blue Dogs are committed to working with our colleagues across the aisle to improve the lives of all Americans and solve our nation’s ongoing fiscal crisis.

“We believe that the burden of the American taxpayer should be reduced whenever possible. The American tax code should be simply structured. It should be designed to create incentives for income earning, saving, investing in jobs, and expanding opportunities.

“In its current form, the President’s plan would provide significant tax cuts, and it doesn’t provide clear details on how this would be paid for. We strongly believe that reform should be budget neutral, while providing relief for the middle class. Without a clear plan to pay for reform, this plan could add trillions of dollars to the nation’s deficit, further worsening the ongoing fiscal crisis.

“We recognize that this is only the start of an important national debate. We look forward to working with our Republican and Democratic colleagues to advance the conversation in the House in a productive and bipartisan manner.”
